Let’s go back in time, Lovelies, to 2012. I had just mainlined The Hunger Games series for the first time (and the second, then the third) and had never read a fanfic. I barely knew what they were.

So I read my first fic. My First Date with Katniss Everdeen

It was unputdownable. (Is that a word? It should be a word.)

Anyway, I remember reading Mockingjay and being struck by the gap between when Katniss goes back to 12 and when Peeta returns. Where was Peeta? WHERE WAS HE? I became a bit obsessed.

Moving On was born. It’s a short 33K fic that attempts to answer this question. Told from Peeta’s point of view, the goal was to get the reader up close and personal with the action in the Capitol.

The Blurb: What happens to Peeta while Katniss is awaiting trial at the end of Mockingjay? How does he put himself back together? How does he end up back in District 12? Takes place before the Epilogue. Rating is T. May move to M due to some hijacking memories.

Fanfic.net

Almost immediately after finishing that, I started writing another. Building the Dream was meant to be my own sort of Empire Strikes Back. It’s told in third person and it actually covers some of the same events of Moving On.

The Blurb: Dr. Aurelius treats Peeta and brings him back to himself at the end of Mockingjay. How does that happen? What role does President Paylor have in making sure Peeta can become whole without Plutarch using him as a piece in a new game? Rated T due to descriptions of Peeta’s treatment by the Capitol post Quarter Quell.

Fanfic.net

If you decide to check them out, let me know!

What I loved about these stories:

  1. They got me started on writing.
  2. They were in-universe, canon. At the time that’s what I loved to read.
  3. There’s no sex. (more on sex scenes much, much later.)
  4. Both of these are *character first*. That’s how I write all of my stuff and it’s translated into my originals as well. I want to write characters that I want to read.
  5. I loved Building the Dream because it really helped me develop an older love interest. Also, I’m especially proud of a few of the battle scenes.

What was hard:

  1. I don’t read a lot of political stuff, so the politics was hard. I remember talking to @randomnoteforfuturereference for hours over some of the things he thought would happen as a result of the events of Mockingjay.
  2. It’s meant to be a trilogy. I never wrote the third installment and that really bothers me.
  3. I don’t know why I never put either of these on AO3. I remember getting roasted horribly for a canon description mistake in Moving On, pulling it, correcting it, and then like, curling up and sucking my thumb for days. Clearly, that affected me.

One more thing. I’m pretty sure the third chapter of Building the Dream was right around the time I read Hotel Paper the first time.

It haunted me. Gutted me. I still think about it.

If you haven’t read it, you should. Seriously. But be prepared to cry and need some tissues.

Hotel paper destroyed me so much I wrote a fanfic about it!! lol….

….whispers from afar…hotel paper…

@mega-aulover I know… I still like to think that they found one another again.

@chele20035 it is the story we keep in the freezer!

It’s the story… that we wish we could write for the simple reason it haunts everyone who reads it.

I’m totally ripping this idea off from @katnissdoesnotfollowback because:

  1. It’s brilliant.
  2. Have you ever seen a better Tumblr name? No. I don’t think you have.

I thought I would showcase a fic maybe once a week? Talk about where it came from, what I liked about it or thought was done well and what makes me totally cringe.

I know that I don’t have a lot of followers who are in the THG fandom. I know I’ve never been one of the “popular kids”. But I’ve been in this fandom since 2012 and WOAH, that’s a long time. I’m going to celebrate, dammit.

Also, I do still get readers on both AO3 and FF.net. And that completely terrifies me and fills me with joy and awe.

I love you guys. The old guard, the newbies, the Gadgers, The Everlarkers, and those of you who love all of the other pairings or are here for the politics and social messaging. All of you are so bright and have something so damn important to say.

Now, go drink some water you lovelies. I’ll post about my very first fic later tonight.

Post 2: Winter Solstice and Stars

I’m back to set the stage for what I’ll call the next piece of my canon evolution.

Winter Solstice and Stars were both written in the winter of 2012/2013. They’re little more than vignettes, as I tried to learn how to deal with District 12 as a setting and Katniss and Peeta (and Madge and Gale) as characters.

At this stage in the game I hated Gale. I loved Madge. I absolutely hated that they did not include her in the movies.

Winter Solstice has some glorious head jumping. I wasn’t ruthless about not doing back then, and I even ask for feedback on it! It’s also hilarious to me that Peeta’s brother isn’t named Rye. You’ll also see my trademark use of food beginning here. My dialogue is stilted, but I like what I did with some of the character interaction here. Definitely character driven without a ton of plot action.

Gale’s a bit of a douchebag. Even then, I shipped him with Madge. I feel really awful about what must happen behind the scenes in this fic and I sort of want to hit him. If only I could apologize to Madge and tell her that I make it up to her in glorious fashion later.

I remember that we had a lot of conversations that winter about how there’s no religion in THG. I adamantly believed that there would still be some festival of some sort and I wanted to try my hand at writing something.

Stars is another little character driven piece. It’s to get into Peeta’s head at various times. Inspired by Orion, it was more an homage to what the Stars above 12 must look like without a lot of light pollution. There’s some stilted internal dialogue in this one as well. But I’m super proud of how easy it was for me to hop right into Peeta’s head those days.

I love some of these older fics because it really shows you where my skill level was and also my headspace with regard to canon.

sharing a wip because I’m really pleased with how it’s looking, but also I tried to incorporate some native american patterns with a capitol flair (headcanon is art nouveaux) into Katniss’ design and idk how well i’ve managed it…please lemme know if anything is massively Wrong

writing-prompt-s:

You are kidnapped by the villain regularly, but you’re starting to look forward to it. You know they won’t hurt you, and are simply being dramatic. It also doesn’t help that you are the only person they ever kidnap. This time, the hero doesn’t bother trying to save you.

NOTE: This story was originally written for the “Love and Other Kerfuffles” anthology, published by The New Romance Cafe in 2023.

Un-Valentine’s Week is a short story about Amy, who’s quitting her job at a resort in a tropical paradise, and Taylor, the guy who crashes a week-long celebration made especially for single ladies. Hilarity ensues!

alexagirlie asked:

thelettersfromnoone Answer:

questions for fic writers

Thank you @alexagirlie❤️❤️

16. What’s an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?

I love time-traveling fics!! Or inter-dimensional travelling fics!

I would love to have, say, The Last Kingdom’s Coccham Squad fall forward in time as opposed to back; I would love Katniss and Peeta ending up in our times as opposed to someone ending up in Panem. I just. Would love to see it. Take the boys and girls and pop them in completely different circumstances!!

(Imagine Uhtred in Panem dealing with President Snow? Imagine Finan seeing an iPhone for the first time??)

THE first fic I booked on AO3 was Nothing Makes Sense ,in which Katniss ends up in the Marvel-verse, and I think that’s such a brilliant idea. (The fic was last updated in 2015, so as a slow writer myself anything is possible! But it may not happen and I understand that.)

Marvel-THG mashup! OR a Marvel-TLK mashup!! I would so love to see it.

I love mashups of different universes in general, really! I love your Shadowhunters AU, it’s such a good thought to have the Coccham squad be Shadowhunters!!!

41. Link a fic that made you think, “Wow, I want to write like that.”

You will notice these are… all THG. Sorry xD These are some of my OG beloved fics. But I feel like I could just… scroll through my bookmarks forever!!

48. What’s the last fic you read? Do you recommend it?

Read in the last few weeks: Her Mouth Spreads Into What I Take for a Smile, and a heart like mine oh gosh.

Um.

I am currently reading Shieldmaidens by Maxy, which funnily enough brings up the time-travel aus! I really like that the author doesn’t just have them understanding one another right off the bat– they make it clear that the language barrier is a barrier and not just a punchline, and there’s a lot of references to things like diet and hygiene etc.

Next on my list is An Everlarked Ever After by @mega-aulover. I need to start Fool Me Twice, and I have to catch up on Roses and Pearls by @thesweetnessofspring and Whispers of Wessex . Um. And I have… just so many. So Many Fanfictions!!!

(Just kidding. But Overload is real bc I am a slow reader but I want to read ALL OF THE THINGS!!!!!)

Oh my goodness!! 💜💙💜💙💜💙
